Hello Dear Readers!

Happy New Millennium, Century, and Year! It's officially - by everyone's standards - a new millennium! Isn't it exciting to be able to say that we witnessed the beginning of the millennium?

I hope you all had a great holiday season. It's back to work for me... business slows down during the holidays for me. I guess we're all so busy buying for everyone else that we don't have time and money to do our homes! :-) So now everyone's resuming their projects or starting new ones, and business is getting busy again.

I've found a great article for you this month on the Shabby Chic style that is so popular today. The great thing about Shabby Chic, is that even if you don't care for the overall look of Shabby Chic, you can still use principles and ideas and incorporate them into your style. I hope you enjoy it!

Congratulations go to Dottie of North Carolina! She was the lucky prize winner among the December subscribers. She received a free pair of small crochet boxes. She chose to have hers decorated in a wildflower look.

This month's prize will also be a free set of two small crochet boxes! These pretty little accents are perfect for the dresser top, bathroom counter, or living room end table. The winner will get to choose the colors and general type of flowers that will be used to decorate the top! So forward this to your friends, or send them by the site to subscribe so they get their chance to win! All those subscribed at the end of the month are automatically entered. For more information on the drawing, see my drawing page.

2. Tips & Tricks
      - Unique Decorative Accents

How do you get a unique look in your home? With unique accents! Accents don't have to be limited to figurines and pictures. There are tons of items that can really help pull your home together when used right. Here are some ideas:

- - Use dishes that coordinate with your bedroom or living room decor. A place setting - especially one that has different coordinating patterns for the different items - gives a great look. Hang the dinner and salad plate on the wall, fill the bowl with potpourri and display it with the teacup and saucer on a shelf under the plates. I'm doing this with a Jessica McClintock rosebud pattern that goes with my daughter's rosebud sheets.

- - A shawl in the same colors or similar pattern gives a great touch draped over a bedpost or chair-back, or used as a runner over a wooden side table.

- - Find one of those beautiful hard-cover spiral bound blank notebooks that coordinates with your room. Use it for a phone message book in the living room or kitchen, or a "To Do" notebook in the bedroom.

- - Always keep an eye out for beautiful pillows that will go with your decor.

- - Celestial Seasonings tea boxes (or other brands) are decorative little boxes that are charming displayed on a shelf with a doily hanging out.

- - A bag of potpourri tied with a fancy bow in coordinating colors looks great resting in a basket or decorative box.

- - Those photo boxes that you can get at Wal-Mart and K-Mart come in all sorts of great patterns, and are just as great for displaying as they are for storing odds and ends.

Just keep your eyes open at all times for absolutely ANYTHING that reflects the look of your room... don't limit yourself with ideas of the 'right' or 'wrong' ways to display and use things. You'll be surprised what you find!

      Have fun!

3. FEATURE ARTICLE
      - 10 Elements to the Shabby Chic Look

This month's article is also an on-line article hosted on About.com. I hope you don't mind having to click on the link to go on-line, since that's the only way I have permission to use it, but it'll be worth the small extra time! Plus, you get to take extra advantage of having photos to accompany your information.

For those of you who may not be familiar with the Shabby Chic style, I encourage you to read this article and get an idea of what it does and doesn't involve. It's hard to describe the style in a few words, so you'll just have to look. :-) Even if you don't like the entire look, you'll still get lots of inspiration. Enjoy!

Note: It's a two-page article, so make sure you follow the link to the second page... that's where most of the information is!

4. CHALLENGE OF THE MONTH
      - Stretch Your Budget!

Chances are that decorating was at least in the back of your mind when you were making your resolutions last month... if not actually on your list! The problem is, many of us are now finding that our budgets don't match our dreams. So do we give up? Never! We just need to use our imagination and figure out ways to stretch our budget. Say, for example, you've found a great floral print, but it's too expensive for you to afford to use for the duvet cover, bedskirt, shams, pillows, and window treatments that you need. Why don't you go find a matching solid color and coordinating stripe in inexpensive twin sheets? Use the expensive floral in the most visually obvious places, and fill in the rest for a great look at a fraction of the cost. Here's an example:

- - Duvet Cover - Use the floral for the bottom 2/3 of the cover, large buttons, and fabric-covered cording; use the solid for the top 1/3, and use the stripe for the underside.
- - Bedskirt - Use either the stripe alone, or a combination of the stripe and solid.
- - Shams - Use the floral for the main section of the front, and the solid for a surrounding ruffle.
- - Throw Pillows - Use a combination of all three fabrics for a great eye-catching collection.
- - Curtains - Use the solid for rod-pocket panels (Two twins sheets give a small to medium sized window great fullness.) Use the floral for tiebacks.
- - Valance - Choose a valance that will allow you to use both the floral and the stripe, such as a reversible scarf or double balloon valance.
- - Finally, you could use a little more of the floral in a table scarf or runner for your bedside tables if you'd like to use a little more.

Now you've got a great coordinating bedroom ensemble at a fraction of the cost! Your print looks like you've used a lot of it, since it's in the most noticeable places... the most visible section of the bed, your focal point pillows, and the eye-catching portion of your windows. But instead of having to buy dozens of yards of the expensive fabric, you've only had to buy about 4 yards of it. The rest came from 7-8 twin sheets, which can sometimes be bought for as little as $5.00 each! Isn't that great? Now you do it! Feel free to ask me for suggestions if you get stuck!

Remember, if your decorating isn't fun, it isn't worth it! So enjoy it!
