Hello Dear Readers!
Well, I haven't had this baby yet! My
due date is only 1 week away, so all of you
mothers out there know what I feel like... I
just want to have this baby! :-) Hopefully he
or or she will come this week. You'll hear all
the good news next month! (...and photos if
you want. *smile*)
I'm starting a new series of four
articles this month that I hope you enjoy. This
month is 'Achieving the Look You Want With Color'
and the next three months will be on Patterns,
Materials, and Furnishings. Enjoy!
Congratulations go to Judi of Wyoming!
She was the lucky prize winner among the February
subscribers. She received a free triple wreath
set. She chose to have hers decorated in navy,
mauve, and cream dried-look flowers.
This month's prize will also be a free
Small Wreath Set! This beautiful accent consists
of three small wreaths hung one above the other
on a bow-tied ribbon. The winner will get to
choose the color and style of the flowers, and
I'll design their very own unique and beautiful
little accents. So forward this to your friends,
or send them by the site to subscribe so they get
their chance to win! All those subscribed at the
end of the month are automatically entered. For
more information on the drawing, see my drawing
page.

3. FEATURE ARTICLE
- Acheiving the Look You Want With Color
So you've gone through all the magazines and
decorating books, and you know the general look
that you want your room to have. But you don't
want to copy it exactly... so what do you do to
get that look with YOUR colors, patterns, fabric,
and furnishings? This article deals with
achieving the look you want with color, and we'll
talk about patterns, materials, and furnishings
in the other articles of this series.
There are three major aspects of color
that will affect your room. The first is shade -
how pale or dark your colors are. The second is
tone - specifically the warm or cool tones and
undertones in your colors. And the third is
intensity - how bright or muted your colors are.
- - - THE EFFECTS OF A COLOR'S SHADE:
The shade of a color - how pale or dark it is -
is the easiest aspect of a color to determine.
We grew up coloring with light green and dark
green, or light blue and dark blue. We might now
call them 'celery', 'hunter', 'sky', and 'navy',
but it's still pretty easy to figure out whether
a color is pale or dark. Basically, the more
white has been added to the color, the paler it
will be. While it never made much difference in
your coloring books whether you chose a light or
dark color, it will make a significant difference
in your home decorating. You have to remember
that light colors will reflect light, while dark
colors will absorb light. This means you'll want
to use light colors in rooms that don't get much
light, or in rooms that you want to be bright and
cheery. On the other hand, dark colors are good
for rooms that have plenty of light and which you
want to feel serious or quiet. Also remember
that light colors make a room feel larger, while
dark colors make your room feel smaller.
- - - APPLY this to your decorating:
As you decide which colors you want in
your room, think about the size of your room, and
the amount of light that is available - both
natural light and artificial light. If your room
is small, or if it only has moderate to poor
light, then you'll want to use lighter colors in
your decorating. If you have your heart set on
maroon, navy or some other dark color, try either
mixing it with liberal amounts of pale colors or
white, and/or using a color that is several
shades lighter... colors always appear darker in
smaller, darker rooms anyway!
- - - THE EFFECTS OF A COLOR'S TONE:
The tones, (or actual tints) of your colors will
affect your room differently, depending on
whether they are warm or cool in tone. Warm
colors - colors with orange and yellow undertones
- warm and 'cozy up' a room. They will bring out
the warmth of natural light in the room, and make
even dark days appear more sunny. Ivory and
cream colors are warm neutrals. Cool colors on
the other hand - colors with blue and purple
undertones - cool and calm a room and make it
feel extra fresh and new. They seem to encourage
shade and breezes, and will make hot days feel
cooler. PURE white - without any tint - and grey
are the cool neutrals. Keep in mind that white,
red, and green are often tinted one way or the
other. If they seem to have a little yellow
mixed in, then they are considered warm. But if
they are tinted with blue, then they'll be cool.
Feel free to mix and match warm and cool colors,
but it is generally best to let one dominate, and
use the color(s) from the other as accents.
- - - APPLY this to your decorating:
As you choose your colors, think about
whether you want a warm and cozy look, or a cool
and clean look in your room. To make your room
feel warm and cozy, use plenty of warm colors.
If you want to use mauve (or other cool color)
and green, for example, then use plenty of cream
colors to warm it up, and choose a green that has
at least a small hint of yellow or olive in it.
If you want to give your room a cool and breezy
beach home feel, but have your heart set on red
and yellow, then use lots of pure white (not one
with yellow tints), and choose a red that has
blue undertones, rather than orange undertones.
Remember that green is always the most versatile
non-neutral color, because it goes with
everything (flowers of all colors have green
leaves), and because it can be easily found in
both warm and cool tints. Khaki, olive, celery,
and lime are tinted with yellow and are warm,
while (most) mint greens, sage, sea green, and
teal are tinted with blue and are cool.
- - - THE EFFECTS OF A COLOR'S INTENSITY:
Finally is the intensity of a color - whether
it is bright and vivid, or muted and 'dull'.
Bright colors bring energy to a room and draw
attention to themselves, while muted colors calm
and stay in the background. It is important to
understand how the intensity of a color is
totally different than it's shade. If the shade
of a color is how much white is added to lighten
it, then the intensity of a color is how much (or
little) gray or brown has been added to mute the
color. Think of the difference between 'royal',
'navy', and 'sky' blue. Or look at the
difference between 'fuchsia', 'mauve', and 'pale
pink'. All three pinks could have the exact same
proportions of blue and red in them - and so
essentially be the same color. The fuchsia has
the greatest intensity, since it is made with
only red and blue. If you add white, it will
lighten the shade, but not the intensity - you
can get a light, but bright pink. But if you add
gray to the fuchsia, it begins to soften and
become muted... by adding dark gray, you can get
a soft, dark mauve.
- - - APPLY this to your decorating:
When choosing your colors, think about
whether you want a lively and bright room that
stimulates conversation and activity, or whether
you want a room that will relax, calm, and not
draw attention to itself. If you want an
'active' room, then brighten up your color
choices, and be bold in how you use them. But if
you want your room to feel gentle and relaxing,
then tone them down into the muted shades. Any
color can be brightened or muted, so you don't
need to limit or change your color choices to do
this!
The point of all of this is that it's not really
the basic colors that you choose that will make
or break your room... it's the variety of those
colors. One blue could look great where another
is awful! And another green might tie everything
together, even though that mint green clashes
terribly. :-) So learn to look INTO your colors
and, rather than just At them, and think about
what they'll do to your room, rather than just
how they look on that little swatch or chip.
You'll have a much easier time successfully
achieving the look you want!

4. CHALLENGE OF THE MONTH
- Remember the Truth about Easter
It's not often that I say much about my
faith to you all, unless I am asked. But this
month I'd like to challenge you all to look past
the Easter baskets and candy and bunnies and
decorations, and remember what Easter is really
about... about the death and resurrection of Jesus,
the Son of God, 2000 years ago. Remember, or
find out, what it can mean to you today... that
your sins can be forgiven and your heart washed
clean... that you can live daily in the peace,
joy, and victory that His resurrection gives us,
if we give ourselves to Him. If there are any of
you who do not know Jesus as your Savior, and
want to be introduced, please write and give me
that pleasure.
May you all have a wonderful month and
grow to know Him better!

Remember, if your decorating isn't fun, it isn't
worth it! So enjoy it!
