1. Tips & Tricks
     - Get Creative With Wall Borders

Did you know that there are dozens of ways to use wallpaper borders?  Of course, you CAN put them around the room at the chair-rail height, or around the ceiling, but you don't have to!  Here are more ideas:

- Put it around the room about 2 feet down from the ceiling to 'lower' the ceiling in a child's room.

- Start at a chair-rail height, but then turn up at an angle and go up several feet higher (or even all the way up to the ceiling) on either side of a bed, TV armoire, or other focal point to dramatize it!

- Choose a border with pictures that can be cut out and pasted on as accents, to look like 'wallies'. This works especially good with children's borders.

- Those same cut-out pictures can be pasted on paper lampshades, used in decoupage projects, and other craft items to accent your room.

- The border (or wallpaper) paper can also be used to cover boxes for decorative storage solutions.

And this is only the beginning!  Be creative and use your imagination!

Have fun!

2. FEATURE ARTICLE - guest article
     - Decorating With Light
     by Maria Palma

You have a room decorated and everything is in place, the colors are great, but something is missing.  It doesn't feel very cozy or inviting.  Did you remember the lighting?  Lighting is an important element in decorating.

THE BASICS

It's good to know the basic terms of lighting first

**Ambient, or general lighting, is the overall lighting of the room.  An example of ambient lighting is natural daylight or from hanging or recessed fixtures. **Task lighting is the intense, direct light that illuminates a reading or work space. **Accent lighting spotlights a specific area of a room such as a table lamp.  Accent lighting can turn an ordinary room into a distinctive one.

As with most aspects of decorating you will want to decide first what type of mood you want to create with lighting.  Also, keep in mind the type of activities that will done in the room as well as the room's features or decorative elements you would like to highlight.

To create a nice ambience in the room try varying the intensities as well as the heights of the light sources.  This adds depth and interest to the room.

TIPS FOR LIGHTING ROOMS IN YOUR HOUSE

Living Room/Family Room

-Try a combination of overhead fixtures, table lamps, and floor lamps for ambient lighting in the living room.

-To make the room appear more spacious, light a whole wall with wall-washers.  Wall-washers are lights that are mounted on the ceiling and are equal distance from the wall and each other.

-Use picture lights to accent artwork or plants.

Dining Room

-The type of chandelier can set the tone of the room.

-A chandelier with a down-light can accentuate the
centerpiece

-Usine halogen bulbs in recessed lights above the outside edges of the table will make the crystal, silverware, and china sparkle

Kitchen

-A light above the table provides a good general light

-To light the counter tops use halogen or fluorescent under cabinet lights

-A good place to have light is above the sink when you are washing dishes

Master Bedroom

-To create ambient light a good choice is ceiling mounted fixtures

-For a brighter light when you are in bed reading use three-way lamps

-Use a wall-mounted light fixture or track lights on the ceiling when space is limited

Bathroom

-When using vanity light strips, use frosted bulbs to minimize shadows

-Another way to avoid shadows is that light comes from above as well as either side of the mirror

-Halogen bulbs in the bathroom are the most flattering to skin tones

Home Office

-To reduce eyestrain light the wall behind the computer

-A desk lamp with adjustable arms can be helpful

TIPS ON CHOOSING LIGHTING SOURCES

-White fluorescent bulbs are extremely energy efficient and long lasting although they cost a little bit more.  They also burn cooler than other bulbs.

-Halogen bulbs produce more light and last much longer than incandescent bulbs of the same wattage.

-Incandescent bulbs are good for general purposes and are inexpensive.
