1. Tips & Tricks
- Easy Thanksgiving Decorating
Would you like to do a little Thanksgiving decorating,
but aren't sure where to start? Here are some ideas:
- Get some of those little tiny pumpkins that are sold along the roadside and have fun decorating with them.
- Get some raffia from a craft store... it's usually very cheap and
sold it a bag... it looks like long pieces of light brown grasses.
It's great for harvest-looking ties and bows.
- Try tying some of the raffia onto the stem of your pumpkins. Or around your crystal candlesticks.
- Use raffia for napkin rings and tie in a nice bow.
- Pick up a cheap basket, tie a big, full bow with the raffia on the
side, and fill the basket with pumpkins, apples, and gourds.
- Get some cinnamon sticks (from the grocery or craft store), and tie
them onto your kitchen cabinet handles with raffia.
- Find a place to tie some cinnamon sticks in your bathroom to scent the air.
- Get a new Thanksgiving tablecloth. It doesn't have to have
turkeys or pumpkins on it... even a nice red or rust-colored simple
tablecloth will spice things up!
- Find or make a Thanksgiving wreath. If you've never made one,
it's easy! Here are complete project instructions from the website
of Michael's Arts & Crafts:

Have fun!

3. FEATURE ARTICLE
- Plan for Christmas Early!
Some of you have probably finished all of your
Christmas shopping. And some of you have probably already written
out your menus. But I bet that most of you (like me) have been
focusing on one part of Christmas planning and forgotten the others...
if we've even really thought about it at all! Just sit down...
right now... pull out a notebook or a piece of paper (I use the
back pages in my grocery notebook so I can easily find it), and start
writing:
1) Christmas Gifts - write down the name of each person that you will
be giving to this year. Beside their name, write down any
gift ideas you already have. If you've already taken care of
that gift, write down what you got and put a check in front of their
name. If you don't have any ideas for someone, just leave it
blank for now. Just keep writing!
2) Baking and Cooking - Briefly write down your baking and cooking
plans for the holidays. Just list what you will be making, and
the time it will take... not each individual item, just the total time
it will take to make cookies, cakes, and dinner items.
3) Scheduled Times - Sketch down a simple calendar of December.
The first is a Sunday this year, the 25th is a Wednesday, and New Years
is the next Wednesday. First mark out the dates that you
will be traveling and away from home. These are "off" days...
make sure you don't plan anything else for those days! If you'll
need the day before and after for packing and unpacking, then mark
those off as well.
4) More Scheduled Times - Now go to Thursday, December 12th and write
in "ship Christmas gifts." UPS ground shipments take 1-7 days,
and the Postal Service usually takes as long or longer, but if you
ship them a week early, you'll have some extra leeway, AND the lines
won't be as long. Making this goal earlier than necessary will
save you time waiting in lines (Friday lines are always longer, and
the next week will be packed...), and it will give you a bit of leeway
if you need it. Another option is to call in a "one-time pickup"
for UPS... they'll come and pick-up your boxes from your doorstep the
next day, and it only costs an extra dollar or two per box... well
worth your holiday time! If you are shipping breakables, then
check to see what the shipper restrictions are ahead of time.
And make sure that there aren't old labels anywhere on the box... you
don't want your Christmas gifts getting sent to the wrong address!
(This happened to me one year.)
5) More Scheduled Times - Do you always go out bargain shopping on
Christmas Eve or the weekend before? If so, write in time for
that... more than you think you'll need! Now write down which day(s)
you will need to set aside for your baking and cooking... refer to
the time you just figured you'll need. Write down to "shop for
baking goods" a week or two before your baking dates... the stores
will be less likely to be out of something if you shop early, and if
they are, you'll have time to go elsewhere. If there's anything else
major that you have planned, like Christmas pictures of the kids, and
mailing Christmas cards, make sure you mark out that as well.
6) More Scheduled Times - Now find the third-to-last "empty" day before
Dec. 12th... that's when you should have your gift shopping done!
If you can have it all (or most of it) done by then, think how much
more enjoyable your Christmas will be! Those three days are 'just
in case' you need them to finish your shopping.
7) Gift Wrapping - Wrap your gifts as you buy them, rather than waiting
until Christmas Eve or "Shipping Day Eve." It always takes longer
than you think, and you always run out of paper or tape if you wait
'till last minute!
8) As you go about your shopping and planning, and you think of another
gift idea for someone, pull out your little notebook and write it down!
Whenever you buy for someone, check it off! Whenever you add something
to cook or bake, write it down! Take the list with you when you
go Christmas shopping to help you out, and use your baking list to
make sure that you'll be getting everything you'll need when you do
that big grocery shopping.
Have fun!

CHRISTMAS WITH VICTORIA
From the experts at "Victoria" magazine, this collector's edition beautifully

WHITE CHRISTMAS
Everyone knows that the best Christmas is a white Christmas - a traditional
celebration with snow capping the eaves, a fire roaring in the fireplace,
and a mistletoe ball hanging in the doorway. Tricia Foley, best-selling author
of Having Tea, Linens and Lace, and The Natural Home, brings back the magic
of the time-honored customs, along with her own white-on-white decorating
style, to create the kind of Christmas that will make treasured memories
for years to come. Even if you can't have a "White Christmas" outside,
you can still have one inside!
