Hello Dear Readers!
Happy Thanksgiving! I'm sure you
all are working hard to get ready for the holidays. My article and
tips this week are more home and organizing oriented then decorating, but
that's often where decorating starts... in the organizing and structuring
of our home and daily lives. (*smile*)
The article is a great one for the holidays... it's
on organizing your child's room. Why is this so good for the holidays?
Because you can get one step ahead of the game and clear things out BEFORE
you're looking for places to put the new gifts! It's also a good opportunity
to teach your children the value of sharing with others, as you give toys
they've outgrown to charity.
The Tips & Tricks involve Christmas cards...
they're tips that my mother (and proof-reader) suggests.
And finally, the advertisers are offering some great deals for your Christmas shopping.

1. Tips & Tricks
- Christmas Card Tips
Plan now for your Christmas cards! We often forget
how much time it can take to finally get them in the mail. While at first
it may seem costly to send cards, I've come to realize that the total cost
of the cards and postage still only adds up to one or two decent purchased
gifts, and if done with a good heart, can bring warm memories and added joy
to many households.
First, consider those to whom you would like to send holiday greetings. Over
the years I've kept a separate special Christmas card address list which
makes the job much easier. Recently I converted it to a simple table in my
computer and use it to print out pretty address and matching return address
labels. If you do use your computer to address your cards, try to select
a pretty font and color which are also easy to read. An ornate font printed
in gold has its place, but not on an item going through the US Postal Service!
I've always thought it sad to get a card with just
a signature, and yet it does get tiring to write mostly the same family happenings
in every card. To handle this, I started a simple yet pretty newsletter to
either add to or replace the Christmas cards, with room at the end for an
additional personal note. It's important that the newsletter sound like it
was written just to the reader, and be an honest representation of what you
want to share. Newsletters which do nothing more than brag on family accomplishments
have given holiday letters a bad name, and are better left unsent!
When planning your Christmas cards, allow time to
collect the addresses, purchase the cards or newsletter paper and stamps,
write and print the newsletter or hand-write personal notes, and address,
stamp and mail them all. For some families, it might be more relaxing and
enjoyable to do what I did for years and send post-Christmas "New Years"
cards and newsletters. I found that the day after Christmas, the hectic push
was over, and I could sit quietly in the glow of the season, writing, reflecting
and sending cards with joy while the rest of the family played with toys
or watched football games. It also let me reply back to some of the cards
we had already received. The main point is to enjoy doing it and share the
joy of the season!

3. FEATURE ARTICLE
- 8 Ideas for Organizing Your Child's Room
by Maria Gracia
"Clean your room."
"Ugh! Oh, Mom. I’ll do it later!"
This same dialog is shared by millions of parents and their children all
over the world. Do you suddenly have the driving urge to get your child’s
room in order? Where do you start? Here are a few ideas:
1. SCHEDULE. Schedule a specific date and time to clean out
your child’s room. Your daughter or son, if she or he is old enough, should
be there to help.
2. DUMP OR DONATE. Have a large box on hand for items you will
be donating to your local charity or selling at a rummage sale. Also, have
a large plastic garbage bag--maybe two or three--for everything you will
be disposing of. Your son or daughter can help here. Let them know that every
item that is of no use to them, that they donate, will be helping another
child. Also, tell them that it’s important to discard anything that will
never be used, to make room for new, useful items.
3. CLOTHES CLOSET. The clothes closet is usually a good place
to start. Pull everything out until it’s completely empty. Then, the only
items that should be returned to the closet are those articles of clothing
or other items that are going to be used again. This should eliminate clothing
that doesn't fit, is worn out, and so on. If you’re not sure if an item fits
your child anymore, have him or her try it on right now.
4. BASEBALL CAPS. Hang a baseball cap rack on the back of your
child’s bedroom door to keep all caps neat and organized. Ensure it’s at
a reachable level for your child and that he/she understands the proper way
to hang the caps on it.
5. SHOES. A shoe rack can keep children's shoes organized, easily
accessible and in one place. Show your child how to organize shoes, keeping
all pairs together and separating dress shoes from casual.
6. STUFFED ANIMALS, TOYS AND GAMES. Put up shelves in children’s
rooms. This is usually a better solution for toy storage versus containers,
because the toys won’t get crushed and will be easily obtainable. Make sure
the shelves are at a reasonable height so that your child can reach wanted
items.
7. PAPER. Create a filing system for your child, to keep artwork,
rock star photos, blank paper, notes from family and friends, etc. Use a
portable filing container that is capable of holding hanging files and that
can be transported to someplace else if necessary. The ones with handles
are nice, since they can be transported to different homes, on vacation,
and so on. Some of these containers have snap-shut compartments for pens,
pencils, clips, and more.
8. RESPONSIBILITY. Teach your children to clean and organize
as soon as they’re old enough to do so. If you help them do this now, you
will be helping them when they’re old enough to move out on their own. Devise
a simple daily checklist for maintenance. If you have two children sharing
the same room, divide the room in half with an imaginary line. Describe this
imaginary line to each child. Assign each one the responsibility of keeping
their side clean and organized.
