- Catch-Alls for Odds & Ends
Simple, classic ashtrays make great catch-alls for
those small odds & ends that make things look so messy and cluttered.
You can often find them at garage sales and flea markets - just look for
those without the little cut-outs for holding cigarettes. Try a single one
on a hall table for keys. Or a row of them along a counter for kitchen odds
& ends. A grouping on your husband's dresser can really tidy things up!
Your husband might like you to use one near the bathroom sink!

2. FEATURE ARTICLE
- Your Decorating Plan

You want to redecorate or remodel your home, but
don't know where to begin. Before you tackle that project it should be understood
what is involved and how it will be accomplished. Here is a basic plan and
some tips to get started!
Ask yourself what you want to accomplish. Is it
an update or a total renovation? If it is an extensive renovation you may
need building permits or a zoning variance.
- Figure out if you can do the designing and planning by yourself, or if you will need the help of a professional.
- Will you do the work yourself or will you hire a contractor?
- Create budget for your project. To make a budget you will first make a
list of all the materials you will need. This will take some time. Visit
your local hardware store, home centers, lumberyard, and furniture showrooms
to gather ideas for things you want and will need to do the remodel. Talking
to professionals will give you a general idea of how much it will cost. Become
a knowledgeable and informed shopper!
- Make a wish list to help organize your thoughts. Make notes about the basic
shape of the room, what problems there are with the room, and the room's
assets. Have a project notebook or scrapbook handy to keep all your thoughts
together. In your notebook describe the room you want to create. If you see
something in a magazine that you like, clip it and save it in your scrapbook.
- Draw a floor plan of the room(s) you want to redecorate. At the same time
identify the focal point of the room. This will help when visualizing where
to place furniture and if pieces will fit into your room. Take this plan
with you when you shop for furniture and use it as a guideline.
- What theme do you want for the room? In this theme, what colors will be used?
- How will you light the room? This is an important aspect for every room
and should be selected depending on the functions of the room.
- Consider the traffic flow and how the room will be used. If the room is
used constantly, you may want to invest a little more money on items that
will be used more often.
- Add your personality to the room! Everything you choose for the room should be things that you love and reflect who you are.
