1. Tips & Tricks
     - Arranging Your Living Room Furniture

Here are some tips for arranging your Family Room and/or Living Room Furniture.  It won't work for all of you, but give it a try if your room doesn't have that "Designer Look" yet.

1. Figure out what your focal point is... the main thing that your eye is drawn to when you enter the room, and what people will want to look at when they're sitting.  This is probably a fireplace, TV, or picture window.

2. Position your largest furniture piece (probably a sofa) opposite your focal point, approximately 10 feet away.  It will probably be in the middle of the room, which is fine.  Just make sure that there is a clear and easy traffic pattern behind it.

3. If you have an area rug, then position it under the front edge of the sofa.  There should be some space between it and the focal point on the other side.

4. Position your coffee table in front of the sofa.

5. Position your other furniture on either side of the coffee sofa, so the furniture forms a "U".  The coffee table should still be in reach.  Try to balance both sides of the U... if you have a loveseat and club chair, then put the loveseat on one side, and the club chair with a side table on the other side.  If you have two chairs, then put
one on either side.

(Note:  If you have two large pieces that are similar in size, then put them on either side of the U, and your small chair in the end of the U.)

6. Position your end tables near the furniture that they fit best with, but keep them balanced, too... not all on one side of the U.

7. If you have other furniture, either move it out of the room, or position it in the spaces that look empty... a chair and table in a corner... a sofa table along the back of the sofa... a book case on the wall opposite the fireplace, etc.  Just make sure that the room stays balanced.

8. Arrange your accessories to compliment the furniture placement.  Don't just stick them on the walls.  If you have a fireplace or other low focal point, then arrange a large grouping or single picture over (or resting on) the mantle.  And place a few accessories near it.  Other than that, leave the wall space immediately on either side of your focal point empty so that nothing distracts from your focal point.

9. Adapt these as well as you can if your furniture is different, your room does not allow for a part of it, or something else is different.  Just make sure your furniture isn't plastered up against all the walls, and make sure that you have a comfortable, cozy conversation area.  If you need more advice on keeping your room balanced, then read my article series on "Achieving Balance in Your Decorating."

2. FEATURE ARTICLE
     - 10 Linens And Things To Personalize Your Bathroom
by Michael Holland - Home Decorating Made Easy

Don't overlook your bathroom. Use these linens and things to add personal accents that will give you and your guests a touch of spa treatment.

   1. Bring In Silk Plants- Plants are a calming influence in any room. In addition, they add texture and beauty. Silk plants are easy to maintain and look like the real thing. Place your favorite flowers in a vase or lay vines along a ledge. In my guest bathroom below, tree branches were placed in an interesting vase for a dramatic effect.

   2. Add Candles/Candleholders- I can't think of any room that wouldn't benefit from interesting candle holders. Your bathrooms are no exception.

   3. Frame Your Bathroom Mirror- This is actually easier than you think. Visit your local hardware store and locate their wood moldings. They come in various widths and have designs similar to picture frames. They can be cut to your specifications. Spray paint them and use double-sided sticky patches to attach them to your mirror.

   4. Lay An Area Rug- This will add texture and color to your bathroom. Oriental rugs will make your search easier because they come in a wide variety of versatile colors and patterns.

   5. Hang Pictures/Photographs- Hang pictures and photographs that tell something about who you are or where you've been.

   6. Select Sculptures/Figurines- What type figurines and sculptures reflect your personality? Wildlife? Clowns? Birds? Ballerinas? Athletes? Whatever it is, place one or two items in your bathrooms that complement your other linens and things and that make a personal statement.

   7. Add Decorative Towels- Have your towels monogrammed or get them with fringed attached to make a personal statement. Although you can purchase the fringed towels, it only took hot glue and a few minutes to apply the fringe to the towels pictured above.

   8. Try A Decorative Box- Decorative boxes come in all sorts of designs, shapes, and sizes to please all styles. They'll add a distinctive look to your bathrooms.

   9. Add Spa Robes- Make your guests feel right at home with thick, supple spa robes. Hang them on the back of the bathroom door.

  10. Say It with Scents- Doesn't a pleasing aroma put you in a relaxing and pleasant mind set? Use a "Lamp Berger" burner or other method to fill your room with the scent of pears, chocolate, rose petals, the ocean, etc. Also, put 3 drops of your favorite of aroma therapy oil on a cotton handkerchief and throw it into the dryer with towels and other linens.

If you're looking for quality linens and things for your bathroom, I recommend that you visit LinenSource. You may also want to browse Linen Place. Both are excellent sites for all sorts of linens and things.

For affordable figurines and collectibles, I recommend Go Collect and Firestar Gifts. You'll also find many other home decor items.

If you like earthy-looking vases and decorative boxes, you'll find them at Novica. This is one of my favorite sites. You'll find many handmade artifacts from all over the world.
