Hello Readers!
I have two very important notes today, so please read BOTH!
First... this ezine has it's own website now!
I have updated the archives, and gotten all the articles online, so there
is now well over 100 web pages - over 700 printed pages - of free decorating
information there. So take a look, bookmark the new site, and tell
your friends!
http://www.DecorDecoratingAndDesign.com
Second... another virus is making the rounds.
It had the servers near me almost completely down for the last day and a
half... I couldn't access email and couldn't access 90% of the websites on
the Internet! That's why this is late. Sooo... UPDATE your
VIRUS SOFTWARE!!! This new virus "hijacks" your computer, and then
uses it to send spam out. You don't want that happening! If you
don't yet have an anti-virus software, then I highly recommend AVG... it's
free to download and is one of the best available... http://www.grisoft.com
I also recommend a firewall program for anyone on cable or DSL Internet access.
This will stop hackers and spammers from using your computer, to.
If you don't have one of these, then I recommend ZoneAlarm... it, too, is
rated as one of the best, and is free for home users. http://www.zonealarm.com
No, I am not affiliated at all with either company... but whenever any of
the 16,000 of you who are receiving this get a virus on your computer, the
virus passes itself to me! So it's in the best interests of both you
and me, to have updated anti-virus software running at all times. (I
get really good at hitting that delete key... )
Finally, this issue has some great instructions for craft and sewing projects, so have fun!
So enjoy the issue, and check out the advertisers!

1. Tips & Tricks
- Make Your Own No-Sew Placemats
Here's a quick and easy no-sew project to add a
festive colorful touch to your breakfast table, picnic table, or TV trays.
You can buy iron-on laminate "by-the-yard" at fabric stores. Here's how you
do it:
1) Choose your fabric... it could be something that coordinates with your
decor, something neutral to go with everything, or you could choose seasonal
fabric.
2) Cut a 12" by 16" rectangle from the fabric for each place mat... two if
you want them to be reversible. You can use straight scissors, pinking sheers,
or some of the fancy cut scissors if you'd like.
2) Cut two 14" by 18" rectangles from the laminate for each place mat.
3) Follow the instructions for the laminate to place them together around
the fabric and for ironing them together. You may need to trim the edges
even after your laminate has cooled.
And that's really all you have to do! Imagine them
with bright floral fabrics, French blue and white prints, cheerful plaids,
bright solids, muted neutrals, ... anything! You could even pick a bunch
of coordinating prints and mix and match!
Have fun!

2. FEATURE ARTICLE
- 7 Easy Steps to Making a No-Sew Roman Shade
by Jennifer Thoden, http://www.sewing-roman-shades.com
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Step #1: Measure your window
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
A. First, you will need to measure the width and height of
your window. These instructions are for an inside board
mount, so you will need to measure the inside frame...
length (top to bottom)
width (side to side)
B. Write your measurements down.
C. Take your window's measurements several times to be sure
they are accurate, and measure in the top, center, and
bottom. These measurements are the finished width and
height of your roman shade.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Step #2: Gather your supplies
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
- Hand sewing needle and thread to match your fabric.
- Sharp fabric scissors
- Straight pins
- Staple gun and staples
- T-square or right angle
- Fabric marking pen
- 1" x 2" board cut to the finished width of your shade
- 2 Right angle brackets... about 1" wide
- Thin wood dowel... about 5/8" thick cut to 2/3 the width
of your shade.
- Roll of fusible web - you can find this at any fabric
store or craft store.
I'd like to interrupt this lesson by saying a few
words about fusible web. If you don't know what fusible
web, it's webs of synthetic fibers, that when heated
melt and fuse materials together. This is what you'll
use in place of sewing hems. Fusible web can be tricky
if rushed... and more importantly it's permanent... so
make sure you have your placement of the web just right
before you press with your iron. BIG TIP... take your
time... make sure it's right the first time. Now, back
to the lesson. You also need...
- Bag of small plastic rings and shade cord... you can
find these at any fabric store... just tell them you're
making a roman shade and they will help you.
- 3 or 4 screw eyes... you can find these at your fabric
store or at a local hardware store. The hole of the
screw eye should be wide enough to allow 3 pieces of
shade cord to slide through.
- Your fabric... use the following formula to determine how
much you will need:
THE FABRIC YARDAGE FORMULA
A. Determine cut dimensions of fabric
Cut width of your fabric = finished width +3"
Cut length of your fabric = finished length +6" +4 3/4"
Example: My shade will be 45" by 70". So the cut width
will be 48" and the cut length will be 80 3/4".
B. Divide the cut width of your fabric by your fabric's
width (45", 54" 60", 90", etc). You will find out the
width of the fabric at your fabric store.
Example: the width of my fabric is 54". So 48" divided
by 54" is 0.88".
C. Round this number up to the next whole number. This is
the number of fabric widths you need.
Example: 0.88 rounded up is 1. I will need 1 fabric
width for my shade.
D. Multiply the cut length by the number of fabric widths
needed. This is the total fabric length needed.
Example: 80 3/4" multiplied by 1 is 80 3/4". I will need
80 3/4" of fabric length.
E. Divide the fabric length by 36" (yard). This is the
number of yards needed of your fabric.
Example: 80 3/4" divided by 36" is 2.24 yards. I will
need 2.24 yards of fabric. To be safe, I will round
this up to 3 yards.
Note: You can NEVER have too much fabric. You can make
pillows with the scraps later. Purchase the same
amount of lining. You don't HAVE to line your roman
shade... but it is highly recommended. Lined shades
will help add privacy and protect the shade from rot.
Plus your shades will look nicer.
F. Square your fabric and your lining. For an easy "how-to"
on squaring your fabric refer to: "How to Make Roman
Shades - An Easy Step-by-step Illustrated Guide"
Click NOW ==> http://www.sewing-roman-shades.com
G. Cut your fabric and lining to the cut widths and cut
lengths you calculated in The Fabric Yardage Formula.

first 2 lessons, PLUS learn how to handle a strong pattern
and piecing fabric for extra wide windows in: "How to Make
Roman Shades - An Easy Step-by-step Illustrated Guide"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Take a couple of days to do these 2 lessons if necessary...
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Step #3: Making the side hems
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
A. Lay your fabric wrong side up on your work space.
B. Measure and mark 1 ½" from each side of the fabric. The
distance between the marks should be the finished width
of your shade. Adjust your marks as needed so that the
distance between the marks equals the finished width of
your shade. It's ok if the sides are less than or more
than 1 1/2"
C. Fold the sides in and press. Be sure that the fold is
even the length of the shade... and that the width
between the folded edges equals the finished width of
your shade.
D. Lay your lining right side up over the fabric. Insert
the edges of the lining under the folded edges of the
fabric.
E. Cut strips of fusible web the same width of the folded
side hems. Cut as many as needed to equal the length of
the shade... you'll need to do this for both side hems.
F. Slide the fusible web between the folded side hems and
the lining.
G. Fuse. (Follow the instructions on your package of
fusible web.) TIP: If your fabric edges seem to unravel
easily, fold the raw edges under 1/4" before fusing.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Step #4: Making the bottom hem and rod-pocket
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
A. Fold up the bottom edge 1 1/2" and press.
B. Cut a thin strip of fusible web that is ¼" by the
finished width of your shade.
C. Slide the fusible web strip under the top edge of the
folded hem.
D. Fuse. This will be your rod pocket.
E. Fold up your bottom hem 3" and press.
F. Cut a strip of fusible web 3" by the finished width of
your shade.
G. Insert the web inside the folded hem. Be sure that none
of the web is outside the edges of the hem. If so...
trim slightly.
H. Fuse.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Step #5: Marking and attaching the rings
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
A. Lay your shade lining side up on your work space.
B. Measure from the bottom of your shade up to the finished
length of your shade. Measure up 2 more inches (the
depth of your board) and mark a perpendicular line. Cut
off the excess fabric
C. Measure 1" in from each side and mark
D. Starting just above the rod pocket, mark every 6" up the
length of the shade... along the 1" mark you just
made... creating little "+" marks.
E. Find the center of your shade and mark every 6" up the
length of your shade... creating little "+" marks.
IMPORTANT: These markings should create parallel lines
that are at a right angle to the edge of your shade.
Take your time and do this step right... otherwise your
shade will not hang straight.
F. Lay a plastic ring on one of the markings... align the
top edge of a ring with the center of the "+".
G. Hand-sew the rings on by inserting your needle into the
lining only, under the top of the ring, and up. Repeat
several times and tie it off. Do this on each of the "+"
markings... you are basically securing the top of a
plastic ring to each "+" mark on the lining. Be careful
not to sew into the fabric, and Do not attach rings to
the very top row. Note: You're probably thinking... I
thought there was no sewing involved... well, there's
another way to apply the rings... you can use ring tape,
but I do not like the final result. You can buy this at
any fabric store for roman shades. And you can fuse the
ring tape to where your markings are now. It's up to you
if you choose this route... be warned, that this method
will show to strong vertical lines through your shade
when you hang it. You may be ok with this... so do what
works best for you.
I. Insert your wood dowel into the rod pocket.
J. Whip stitch the holes of the rod pocket shut. A couple
little stitches will do fine.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Step #6: Install the board mount
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
A. With excess fabric or lining, wrap your board like a
present... use a staple gun to secure the fabric. This
step is optional... for inside mounts, you won't see the
board anyway...
You can find detailed illustrations showing you how
to wrap your board professionally in "How To Make Roman
Shades". Click => http://www.sewing-roman-shades.com
B. Place your board inside the window frame, flat against
the top frame of your window. Mark the side frames where
the bottom of the board lies.
C. Take the board down. Install your right angle brackets
at the lines you marked. They should like upside down
L's. Now, you just have to hang your shade!
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Step #7: Hang your shade
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
A. Lay your board flat on your work space.
B. Lay your shade, fabric side up, on your work space.
C. Align the top edge of your shade with the edge of your
board and staple in place.
For detailed illustrations showing you how to hang
your shade, refer to "How To Make Roman Shades".
Click here => http://www.sewing-roman-shades.com
D. Flip the shade over so the lining side is up on your
work space.
E. Turn the board once 90 degrees as though you were going
to roll it up. It should now be standing on it's 1"
edge, and the fabric should be wrapped under the board
and up the "top" side to where it is stapled.
F .Make sure the board is parallel to your rings and mark
the "under" side of the board where each ring lines up
with it.
G. Screw a screw eye into the center of the board at each
marking. (When you lay your board flat the screw eyes
should be sticking in the air.) Turn the screw eyes so
they are facing each other. This is where the shade cord
will go.
H. Place your board inside the window frame... screw eyes
hanging down. The board should lay on the right angle
brackets.
I. Screw the right angle brackets into the board.
J. Take your shade cord and tie a knot at the bottom left
ring. Secure the knot with some glue if you prefer.
Thread the shade cord through the column of rings and the
left screw eye. Measure out 18" of cord from the left
screw eye and cut.
K. Tie a knot at the bottom middle ring. Thread up through
the middle column of rings, through the middle screw eye
and through the left screw eye. Measure out 18" of cord
from the left screw eye and cut.
L. Tie a knot at the bottom right ring. Thread up through
the right column of rings, through the right screw eye,
through the middle screw eye and through the left screw
eye. Measure out 18" of cord from the left screw eye
and cut.
N. Adjust your shade using the shade cord until your shade
hangs cleanly. Knot the 3 pieces of shade cord together
near the top.
You can install a cleat on the inside frame of your
window as a means to hold the shade cords when raising the
shade. Maybe braid your cord and add a bead or tassel to
your braid.
You're done! How does it look? I'd love to see it, so
send me a photo and I'll put it up in our discussion group.
Enjoy!
