Shabby Chic - Rachel Ashwell

Comfort, the beauty of imperfections, the allure of time-worn objects, and the appeal of simple practical living: these are the cornerstones of what has come to be known as the Shabby Chic style. Like the cozy familiarity of a well-worn pair of faded jeans, the dilapidated elegance of an Italian villa, or the worn grandeur of faded velvets and mismatched floral china handed down from your grandmother's attic, the Shabby Chic style is a revived appreciation for what is used, well-loved, and worn. It is a respect for natural evolution and a regard for what is easy and sensible. The hundreds of lavish photographs in this book invite you inside the unique world of Shabby Chic. Rachel Ashwell, founder of the Shabby Chic home decor stores, for the first time provides her invaluable and much-sought-after advice on how to re-create Shabby Chic style in your own home. With engaging text and easy-to-follow instructions, Rachel details the Shabby Chic basics in a way that will put even the most apprehensive or novice decorators at ease. From flowers to fabrics to lighting, Rachel illuminates all of the elements essential to this unpretentious yet truly exquisite style. (Hardcover)

The Shabby Chic Home - Rachel Ashwell

In The Shabby Chic Home, Rachel Ashwell walks readers through the renovation of her own 1920s home, from the purchase of the originally dark and gloomy house through the repainting (using layers and layers of white paint) of the home and the rebirth of the garden, yard, and pool, to the final decorating of the home for herself and her two kids. Along the way, readers receive advice on how to choose from among the thousands of paint colors, how to decide whether to live with the old or buy new, and why remodeling an older home might not be such a good idea. The latter part of the book explains how to add touches of shabby chic style to every room of a home--old or new--for a finished look. The result, shown in dramatic before-and-after pictures, is a home that's comfortable enough for a family to relax in, but still elegant and beautiful. --Kris Law editor (Hardcover)

Signature Style - Traditional Home editors

There's more to decorating a home well than simply selecting furniture and accessories for each room. A well-dressed home has a certain flair throughout that's stylish and inviting. That sense of style unfortunately doesn't come naturally to most people, so Signature Style aims to help you learn from those who have it in spades. The book features eight American designers, each of whom has a distinctive sense of style, and all of whom are masterful in their approach to interior design... This assemblage of designers brings an impressive amount of training and knowledge to their field--many have classical training at prestigious interior design schools, as well as backgrounds in art, art history, and architecture, and formative experiences in other countries. But the proof is in their designs, and the result is always breathtaking. Well written and laid out, this beautiful book is checkered with plentiful, large color photos of each designer's work. The editors have done a superlative job of selecting some fine American designers to feature in the book--each of these artists brings a timeless yet unique style to his or her work. Readers of Signature Style would do well to take some cues from the designers featured when trying to formulate their own signature style. --Kris Law editor (Hardcover)

House and Garden Book of Country Rooms - Charles Quest-Ritson; Leonie Highton and House & Garden editors
Taking a room-by-room approach, the book looks at interiors from around the world which embody this appealing concept. The selection is gloriously wide, ranging from an exquisitely decorated drawing-room in southern France to a log-cabin bedroom in Aspen, Colorado, and a simple, all-white open-plan interior on St Lucia. Some of the rooms are grand in scale, some modest; some are flamboyant, concentrating on interesting finishes and mixing different styles of furniture and fabrics, while others are reticent in color and content. All of them, however, have originality and style. Informative text and captions highlight the essential elements of the look, making this book an invaluable source of ideas for every designer and decorator. (Hardcover)

Formal Victorian - Ellen M. Plante

Replete with jam-packed rooms and luscious details, Formal Victorian melds architectural profiles, sumptuous interior decor, and stylish displays of collectibles into a handsome package. Apart from a one-page introduction to each of the five sections (exterior decoration; interior details; dressing walls, windows, and floors; elegant furnishings; and traditional touches), the text consists of extensive captions outlining points of Victorian style and offering hints for transposing these looks into your own home. Though the Victorians often tended toward darker colors, some of the photos are a bit too dark, but the intriguing details still manage to shine through. (Hardcover)

The Country Home - Ellen M. Plante

In the search for a scaled-back lifestyle that affords casual, simplified comfort yet still looks polished, many turn to the country theme. This is not the cute country of stenciled ducklings and frilly gingham, but the sophisticated country that draws on rustic traditional styles, from its Colonial, Shaker, and farmhouse roots to its romantic French and English interpretations with modern adaptations. This lovely volume intelligently explores all these variations, offering informative commentary and a wealth of beautiful photos that trace the history and major elements of each permutation, and provides specific suggestions for evoking that particular look. Especially helpful are each chapter's at-a-glance color palettes and sidebars highlighting the notable decorative elements and the relevant design details and accessories. --Amy Handy editor (Hardcover)
